  1. North London ia AGM

    3rd  November 2018

Holtwhites Sports & Social Club, 1 Kirkland Drive, Holtwhites Hill, Enfield EN2 0RN.

All Welcome

The function hall is on the first floor but there are disabled facilities and a lift.

Come along and join us for our annual gettogether and AGM.  Company reps and Stoma Care Nurses will be in attendance and light refreshments will be provided.

Following on from the formalities of the AGM we are aiming to provide entertainment.

Please let Julia know if you'll be coming. We look forward to seeing you there.

We would like to say a very big welcome to six new members, who have recently joined North London IA.  We hope that you find our group a support and informative.

Martin and I attended this year’s National Council in Kent on behalf of North London IA.  In total 150 volunteers, who form the different Membership Organisations all over the country, attended this year’s conference.  It was a very informative weekend, with the official AGM and reports from the staff and trustees of the IA.  National Council and all of the other MOs have been very busy supporting new members, promoting the IA, preparing all the paperwork for GDPR and restructure of the IA.  The restructure should be completed by October of this year. There has been some delays with the completion of the restructure, but National Office are sure that there is light at the end of the tunnel !!

We also listened to some very inspiring talks from Kevin Hayles, who is a clinical stoma nurse specialist, who spoke about skin care. We also listened to Michelle Willcocks, who is a World Triathlete.  She told us her story with UC, surgery, recovery and her amazing achievements of winning many medals (and in that order!) Truly inspirational.  On Sunday, Charles Bailey, who is a consultant and colorectal surgeon, gave us a talk about his experience with volunteering in Madagascar for 3 months with his family.  He told us some amazing medical cases and showed us photos too.

The National Council was a very informative event and it was a real pleasure to attend and to listen to some very inspiring people.

Goodbye to our Chair at National Office

Anne Demick has been involved with the IA for 34 years.  The majority of that time Anne has been the National Secretary and then for the past 3 years she stepped up to Chair, until a replacement was found.  Our new Chair is Stuart Hay, who is a great guy and is also Chair of North Eastern IA. We wish him well with his new role.

The lovely Anne will be very much missed and I hope she is able to have a happy and healthy retirement with her much loved family.  She most certainly deserves to put her feet up.

We had another very successful social at The King & Tinker in Enfield in May.  Even though it was the day of the Royal Wedding and the FA Cup , there were 15 of us having a natter over lunch.  Thank you to those of you who came and a big welcome to some of our newbies too. It was so lovely to meet you.  The next social will be ……….

This year’s AGM – venue still to be confirmed

Unfortunately, we are unable to hold our AGM at the North Middlesex Hospital this year.  I am looking into other venues and was hoping to have heard back before having this newsletter went to print.  We are hoping to host the AGM either on the last weekend of October or at the beginning of November.  I will advice you all as soon as a venue has been confirmed, but please do pencil in these dates.  Thank you for your patience.  (On a good note, I have found entertainment for after the meeting !!!

Following our AGM, John is resting his pen and note pad as our Minutes Secretary.  John has been an invaluable member of our North London committee since 2004.  We would like to thank John for being such an exceptional minute secretary and a true gentleman.  We shall miss his company and contribution during our committee meetings greatly.

We are very keen to hear from you, if you are interested in joining the North London committee.  We meet 4 times a year for an evening meeting and for the AGM.  It would be wonderful to be able have some extra support for the IA events too.  We are a friendly bunch and if you would like to see what being on the Committee entails, you are very welcome to join one of our meetings.  Our next Committee meeting will be held on the 28th June at the Cavell Hospital, Enfield at 7pm.

Membership is an annual subscription of £15 or for over 60s it is £10.  We would also like to thank you for the donations that we receive.

Please note, if you receive any accessories or samples in the IA Journal or from elsewhere, which you would like to try, please contact your local stoma Care Nurse first to check that the product is suitable for you.

If you are on Facebook, please feel free to join our private group.  It is an opportunity to post questions, experiences and positive stories, which we can all share with other North London ia members, if we wish.  This is another way to communicate with our members and any future events will be posted on this site too.

Due to some changes to the Stoma Nurses, we are unable to give you exact details such as times for appointments etc. We are therefore simply listing the telephone numbers so that you have a contact number should you need it.
